Letter from ystark! Director, Aimee Belden

I'm feeling like a broken record, but things here at ystark! are busier than ever. Just like how CAK keeps breaking passenger travel records, we keep breaking our own records with a great number of 'firsts', 'agains' and 'better than ever'!

So, in the case of 'firsts', I'm so very proud of our Wellspring ToGo online article series. We worked with some great local organizations to compile our 'first' series and are gearing up to get the second edition out! Our 'first' online YP networking website went live earlier in the year. Its unique, its different and its just plain cool. And for the 'first' time, we hosted the PolitixMixr, giving our members the chance to network with young elected officials in our region. The partisanship was minimal, but the idea exchange was maximum!

The 'again' category is lengthy, so I'll mention just a few activities. PerplexCity was amazing! We sent the teams virtually all over the county and yet the first and second place teams were mere seconds apart. The Golf League finished before the first snow and the teams had a great time. With the addition of weekly prizes and cash prizes for the winners, it was 'again' another successful year.

Now, for the 'better than ever' stats…if you didn't attend the TKG CEO Mulleet and Eat, I must say that you missed out. They all have a unique flair, but this was over the top. The mullets sported that night were certainly 'better than ever' and we have pictures to prove it. And finally, I just have to tell you that we have 1,285 members! Really? Yes, its true and I'd say that most definitely qualifies as a 'better than ever'!

Thanks for being a part of all of these 'firsts', 'agains' and 'better than ever's' and keep reading on in this issue and you'll see just what I mean.

See how we've been connected in recent months

  • PerplexCity – Team Spinal Tap, made up of worthy competitors Eric and Cathie Belden, John and Becky Falconer and Angelina Colbert, conquered our second annual PerplexCity game in downtown Canton and the vicinity. A total of 13 teams took to the streets, solving challenging clues and racing from location to location – 18 in all – to the finish line at Picciano's Martini Bar downtown.

  • PolitixMixr – The first-ever ystark! PolitixMixr was held at the Canton Club. With so many young professionals in local and regional government, it was the perfect time to give our members the opportunity to mix and mingle with our young and elected. We asked participants to be relevant and real and they did just that. Designed in a speed networking format, the elected officials had the chance to meet a lot of YPs and learn how we are shaping the region. And the young elected officials got to make us better informed by sharing details about their positions, what they do and how they impact the community.

  • CEO 'Mulleet'&Eat at TKG – Hmmm, what can we say other than, you must see the pictures for yourself? In all seriousness, we enjoyed hearing a brief introduction from Prez Geoff Karcher, touring their awesome facility, eating great food and posing (a la Fashion Week backdrop) with mullets, glasses, boas, mustaches and more! Click here to check out the video.

  • Monthly Meet-Ups – We had some mouth-watering fare at the newly opened Brownstone in July. Then, another well-attended event at The Barrel Room in North Canton. They served great wine and it was a perfectly sunny day to enjoy their outdoor patio. Check out the pictures!

  • Recreation – The 2010 Golf League came to a close, with Mike Scheetz and Bill Evans taking top honors in our third year of the League. We also hosted Battle of the Bags The Deuce, at Pete's Grill. Our second cornhole tournament of the year was a great one! Congrats to our winners Brad Spurgeon and Jim Nickol! And thanks again to our partners at The Karcher Group.

  • B2B Expo – We were pleased to co-host the Social Media Café at the B2B EXPO, along with Morris Office Environments and TKG. Guests enjoyed sitting in plush chairs, tweeting on the wireless computers, trying their bowling skills at Wii and sipping a cup of coffee. It was a great place to relax and put up sore feet!

ystark! Reads…
Outliers: The Story of Success

As YPs, we know how important professional development and continued education are to our careers....but we also know brushing up on these skills can be a lot more fun with friends! So, join ystark! Reads, Professional Book Club, to meet other local YPs and discuss and share ideas.

Our second book selection is Outliers: The Story of Success, by Malcolm Gladwell. Currently on the best sellers list, Outliers, delves into the factors that contribute to high levels of success. When author Gladwell was asked what message he wanted people to take away after reading Outliers, he responded, "What we do as a community, as a society, for each other, matters as much as what we do for ourselves. It sounds a little trite, but there's a powerful amount of truth in that, I think." Click here to find out more information about this highly acclaimed book.

Pick up your copy and join us for our discussion of the book in November.
