Radio! It ain't what it used to be, but you still need it.

How does a heritage business continue to succeed in the digital age? How does that business adapt and move forward while still holding on to what has made it great? It’s not done without some kicking and screaming. Over 95 years, WHBC has endured many changes, has felt the national assault on the media, and has seen the need to reinvent itself. But, one constant for WHBC is its connection to the community.

Pam Cook has been with WHBC for 30 years. She is the Content Director for WHBC-AM, the News Director and the host of Canton’s Morning News. Pam will share what has happened to the business over the years and how WHBC remains Stark County’s top radio station.

Entree: Small Cheese Pizza with a Side Salad or Chicken Chef

  • Background/hometown/growing up/education

I was born and raised in the Steel City – Pittsburgh, PA – I knew I wanted to work with the media growing up because I loved to write.  I graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism in 1984.  My first job in radio took me to the small, Ohio town of Bucyrus.  I learned about radio from the bottom up –I turned the transmitter on in the morning and off at night.  I learned news, sports, play by play, reporting, hosting a show, and much more before I took a coveted news reporter job here at WHBC in 1989.

  • Awards received

I received numerous Associated Press Awards for news reporting, documentaries and specials I created at WHBC.  Leading WHBC AM we also have been nominated for a National Crystal Award and the coveted Marconi Award.  In 1976 I was 1st runner up for Miss Teenage Pennsylvania!  Oh and in 2016 – named one of Stark County’s Most Eligible Singles by About Magazine

  • community involvement (include what you host, emcee every year)
    • My community involvement includes Coach/Mentor for Girls on the Run of East Central Ohio.  Wishes Can Happen Wish-a-thon fundraising event every year – host and lead fundraiser.   Also MC of the annual Art of Fashion Event to spotlight courageous Cancer Survivors.  Active member of St. James Church in Waynesburg.
  • your likes / favorite teams / etc.

My likes surround sports – I’m a sports-a-holic.  From high school football, to college football and basketball to the NFL, MLB and the NHL – love, love, love the Pittsburgh team – Steelers, Pirates, Penguins, University of Pittsburgh.  I like to cook, read and spend as much time as possible at the beach.  That is my happy place – other than the Super Bowl or Stanley Cup Championships!

  • previous stations

My first job in radio was WBCO/WQEL radio in Bucyrus, Ohio.  I was hired as a news reporter in 1984 and promoted to News Director.
