Akil Blount Bio:

Hometown: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Former NFL Athlete, Speaker, Entrepreneur.

Akil Blount is dedicated to bringing attention to and honoring athletes from Historically Black Colleges and Universities who have been overlooked in the past. At Linsly, Akil was on the track, football and basketball teams. These teams achieved OVAC championships, and the football team went an astonishing 10-0 his senior year. He was also a member of the chess club and benefitted from all the one-on-one interactions available with the faculty. “My class was very tight knit,” said Akil. “Several athletes went on to play sports in college. Linsly set the foundation for us to be successful leaders.”

After graduation, Akil attended Florida A&M on a football scholarship. He completed his bachelor’s degree in business administration in three and a half years so he could spend the spring training for the 2016 NFL draft class. He was signed with the Miami Dolphins as a free agent, then the Pittsburgh Steelers. After he was released by the Steelers, he went back to Florida A&M for an MBA, which he completed in 2019.

In June of 2019, he was named the first Pro Football Hall of Fame James Harris-Doug Williams Fellow. This position was established as a collaboration between the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Black College Football Hall of Fame. The Black College Football Hall of Fame held a ribbon cutting in 2019 in Canton, Ohio, and will honor players and coaches from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Development of the facility is ongoing, with more building and additions planned, including virtual reality and augmented reality exhibits.

On ending his fellowship, Akil earned a permanent position on the staff at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is the Corporate Sales Executive and is deeply involved in enshrinement events, the HBCU game weekend and exhibit development.

Outside of work, Akil likes training horses, working out, traveling and playing golf.
