NATIONAL SAFETY STAND-DOWN: FALL PREVENTION
This month we have special Safety Tip. May 6-10 is a National Safety Stand-Down to prevent falls in construction. Falls are the number one cause of fatalities in construction, the most frequently cited by OSHA. Falls make these lists because they are a serious hazard. There are many types of fall hazards, below are just a few.
- Ladders
- Personal Fall Arrest Systems (harness & retractable)
- Proper Tie-Off Anchor Points
- Guardrails/Handrails/Barricades
- Slips/Trips
- Getting on/off Equipment/Trucks
- Scaffold
- Walking/Working Surfaces
- Stairs
- Holes
- Roofs
- Chairs
Each of these have many fall hazards associated with them. What fall hazards can happen today? How can we protect ourselves from them? We should be asking those two questions every day before starting work or when the scope of work changes. Speak up when your supervisor is reviewing your job task, and throughout the day, if you think of, or discover, any additional hazards. This goes for other types of hazards too not just falls.
Employees are our most valuable asset, our work would not be possible without you, and we want you to be healthy and happy. Falls are also one of the most common accidents at home too, so take this safety mindset home with you. Safety Always is not just for work.
